Halloween might be over, but Orion's not ready to let the spooky season die just yet. His ranch is still dressed up with cobwebs and plastic spiders, pumkin berries still grinning from the windows.[break][break]

He hadn’t really had plans for the night, and to someone like Tam, that’s just fine. Yet, when Orion Lykos’s text had been read a few minutes after it arrived, the response had been written easily: simple and to the point, just like most of Tam’s messages.

He probably should have asked what kind of movie they would be watching, but this doesn’t occur to him – not even during the short journey from Slateport to the outskirts of Verdanturf Town, nor by the time he finds himself knocking on the front door of Orion’s house.

”Hey. I brought popcorn.” Is all the captain says as a greeting, bag of popcorn in hand.

Spending his evenings alone is usually perfectly fine to him, he has never minded solitude, but sometimes things like these can be nice too, perhaps if only because he likes Orion’s company.

Orion's eyes light up as he answers the door, whether due to seeing Tam Fawley or the popcorn the Captain's brought with him.[break][break]

"Aw, hell yeah! Come on in."[break][break]

Altair chuffs softly in greeting, not bothering to get up from his comfortable spot on the rug near the fire. Perseus, who had come to the door at Orion's side, bristles and stands at attention until seeming to register the captain's familiarity.[break][break]

(He'd never quite been the same, after Choi.)[break][break]

"Hope you like horror," Orion jests as he leads the way into the living room, never once considering that maybe Tam doesn't.

Tam is not oblivious enough not to notice the excitement in both Orion’s expression and tone (even if it may only be because he’s actually learning to read him after spending so much time with him), but in true Tam nature, he simply assumes that this is excitement is there because of the movies they’ll be watching.

Sky blue eyes fall upon the pokémon, both the ever so cautious Silvally and the Absol who always accompanies Orion. Honest and blunt as Tam may be, this time he chooses to keep the full extent of the truth to himself for the sake of not ruining Orion’s excitement.

He has never watched a horror movie and liked it. He doesn’t say that much.

"Oh, I have," Orion admits, with only a little bit of sheepishness. "Most of them, anyway. I kept a couple of the new ones for tonight."[break][break]

Tonight, because he has the night off and can watch horror movies until the sun comes up without fear of being too exhausted for a shift. Over the course of working with the Slateport Rangers, and definitely in part because of Tam, he's improved his work ethic. He cares about them in a way he hadn't cared for those at his previous posting.[break][break]

Part of that was because of his trauma, but the rest?[break][break]

It was like having friends, even if they were mandated by work hours to spend time with him.[break][break]

"I don't mind re-watching movies. Used to do it a lot when I first moved out of my parents'."[break][break]

Not out of choice, back then, but necessity. He still had his VHS tapes from those days of old, well-loved as they were. His VCR still worked, too, though tonight he's simply pulled up a movie streaming service on his TV like a good modern citizen.[break][break]

"What kind of movies do you usually watch?"[break][break]

It occurs to him he's never asked before.

A tiny, whispered thought is born in Tam’s mind at that moment; one that wonders what kind of movie Orion had wanted to watch with him. It’s silly. He usually wouldn’t care about those things. All movies are the same, aren’t they? Inconsequential to him, and yet…

Tam meets Orion’s gaze, and at the next question, he looks puzzled for a second or two. Does he have a type of movie he likes more than others? A genre he particularly favours? Leave it to Tam to never give much thought to things like those.

”Hmm… Action movies, I guess? Those can be fun. Usually I just watch whatever’s on TV, though.”

Perhaps unfortunately for Tam, I don't mind is taken as acceptance of whatever horror film Orion has in his back pocket. He doesn't stop to consider that it might be politeness or curiosity that fuels the statement.[break][break]

He does notice the puzzlement in the other's gaze upon asking after his preferences, but as someone with social anxiety, that doesn't concern him much. His brain had a nasty habit of short-circuiting whenever he was asked his feelings on anything, regardless of whether he possessed strong ones.[break][break]

Action movies don't interest Orion much, but that doesn't bother him. Everyone had different tastes.[break][break]

"Really? You never go to the theatre?"[break][break]

He flicks through the list of titles saved to his favourites and settles on something he'd yet to watch. It was a slasher flick, if the poster was anything to go by, but the ratings were decent enough.[break][break]

There were sure to be a lot of jumpscares for Tam.[break][break]

"TV movies are usually the worst ones."

He says it as if it's obvious, shaking his head. He's sure loads of the Slateport Rangers would love to go to the movies with Tam. Orion usually goes to the theatres alone, but that's because he's too awkward to ask anyone else. He doesn't mind it, though, and his loyalty card at the theatre in Mauville has already maxed out on its perks.[break][break]

"I'm an everything critic," Orion shoots back. It's true; he's one of the Squad's more cynical members.[break][break]

He watches enough movies to be sensitive to little things about the cinematography, like what sort of shots they'd filmed or what kind of lighting rig had been used. He tries to block that out on his first watch through, though not always successfully.[break][break]

Tonight, though, he's too giddy about Tam being over to think about it.[break][break]

"You probably haven't," he agrees, reaching to grab some popcorn. "This one's pretty new. Came out... two months ago, I think?"

It’s not obvious. Of course it isn’t. Not to him, at least. As far as Tam’s aware, there’s no reason why anyone would actually want to go to the movies with him. If anything, they’d probably just agree out of politeness.

Still, he takes a second to think of who’d he’d invite if he had to choose someone, and out of all the people he knows, it’s actually Orion that comes to mind.

”True, you are, but it’s cute.” It’s said in passing, as nonchalant and blasé as it gets, because it’s what Tam thinks and in the case of things like these, he doesn’t even stop to consider if he should or shouldn’t say it. Why would he keep something like that to himself?

Taking some popcorn, he watches as the movie begins, already feeling the slight tension that comes with the all-too-ominous music.

Orion has never made his love of cinema particularly obvious, so Tam could be forgiven for not realising until now. But hadn't the invitation to a movie night made it obvious? Perhaps he had to be more direct.[break][break]

Shame he struggles with that when he likes someone.[break][break]

"You could go with me."[break][break]

He intends it to come across as a pointing out of the obvious, teasing Tam for not figuring it out, but anxiety softens it into something more hopeful. He focuses on the TV to alleviate his embarrassment, especially when Tam calls him cute.[break][break]

"Not this one, no. It's new, so I was saving it for tonight."

He didn't mind reruns, but he had to have some new movies.[break][break]

Outside, something thuds; Orion glances in the general direction of the sound, then shrugs. He was surrounded by wilderness on the ranch, so it wouldn't be the first strange noise in the middle of the night.

Tam really spends a solid moment thinking about it when Orion points that out, but ultimately, despite the fact that they’re currently having a movie night, he absolutely draws a blank. Leave it to him to completely miss what would likely be obvious to most. Typical Tam.

Thankfully for Orion, he also misses the hopeful notes in the suggestion.

”Sure, we can go together sometime.”
[break][break]
Just like that, agreement is spoken as they watch the movie, and for a second or two, Tam is pleasantly distracted by thoughts of going to the movie theatre with Orion. The music soon grabs his attention once more, though… as do the strange sounds coming from outside.

He tries his best to ignore it at first, he really does, but when something hits the window just as the movie’s soundtrack hits its most suspenseful moment, he can’t help but noticeably tense up and instinctively move just so slightly closer to Orion.

”Fuck… what the hell was that?”

A handful of popcorn falls to the floor.

Giddiness and warmth spread in tandem at the thought of a movie date with Tam, and Orion finds his focus drifting between the screen and his own imagination. A cheap jump scare doesn't phase him in the slightest; he chuckles, if anything.[break][break]

Until something thuds against the window.[break][break]

He can't even enjoy the fact that Tam's instinctively pressed close to him, for the noise is followed up by a rumbling groan that sounds distinctly ursine.[break][break]

"Shit."[break][break]

Fumbling for the remote, which had slipped into the crack of the couch, he pauses the movie and scrambles unsteadily to his feet. Altair and Perseus are similarly on alert, the previously dozing Absol shaking off sleep as white fur ripples along his spine.[break][break]

Thud.[break][break]

The window shakes from the impact.

A hand grips onto Orion’s forearm, an action that Tam neither put any thought into nor is initially aware of. An instinct, nothing more. But, what is it supposed to convey? Something along the lines of ‘Stay here’ maybe. ‘There’s something dangerous out there’. ‘Stay with me.’

Once Tam realises, he immediately lets go.

”Don’t be stupid.” His own thoughts reproach. ”We’re in the middle of nowhere. It’s obviously a wild pokémon.”

Right, he’s a goddamn Ranger Captain, why hadn’t that been his first thought? Usually it would be, for Tam is rarely someone to be fazed by sudden events, but perhaps the truth is that movies like this really put him on edge. Perhaps it’s also this whole situation in general; being here, with Orion Lykos right next to him–…
